A smart pot is a fabric container in which plants are grown. These types of pots are made from a specialized, aerated fabric that promotes strong root growth and produces a healthier plant. Compared to pots made from other materials, such as plastic, smart pots remain cooler on hot days because they allow air to flow through the fabric – it has been shown that when roots are heat stressed they grow poorly.
Another feature of smart pots is their ability to prune roots. This occurs when a root tip reaches the outside of the bag. When this occurs the root stops growing out and produces lateral roots instead; that is, roots grow by side-branching. As a result of this process the smart pot promotes widespread fibrous root growth which promotes greater water and mineral absorption leading to healthier more vigorous plant growth.
