Avoiding Medical Resident Burnout

Residents training to be fully licensed doctors can easily get exhausted. Most of these professionals work more than 60 hours a week, and usually for pay that’s well below what they deserve. If you’re one of these professionals, help yourself avoid medical resident burnout. You don’t want to jeopardize your own career or your own health trying to help others.

Start by setting reasonable expectations and goals for yourself. Know your limits and don’t be afraid to communicate your own needs to your supervisors and advisors. It’s hard to stand up for yourself when you’re training to be a medical professional who is taken seriously. But, you have to stand up for yourself.

When you’re not working, take some time for yourself. Engage in practices like meditation, yoga, journaling, or even long walks. Keep yourself fresh and emotionally well while you finish your residency.
