A Career In Portrait Photography

Portrait photography is just one of several specialized areas of photography. While a Bachelor’s degree is helpful, it isn’t a requirement, although a background in photography is obviously useful. Many portrait photographers begin by working as an assistant or volunteering, and a portfolio of work is useful. In particular, you’ll need to know about lighting your subject, the most effective poses, and have to experience with photo editing software. And taking photographs of people also means you’ll have to enjoy working with people, especially small children or those who are reluctant to have their picture taken. There’s also the business side of things if you work as a freelance photographer, and you’ll need to have some knowledge of accounting, billing, and taxes, as well as marketing. Keep in mind that it can be seasonal work, with portraits more in demand at graduation and during Christmas.
